Nuchal Translucency Perth

What is a Nuchal Translucency Test?

The Nuchal Translucency Test is performed towards the end of the first trimester of your pregnancy. This safe test is available to check if your baby has a chromosomal abnormality in particular Downs Syndrome or also known as Trisomy 21.

The Nuchal Translucency test is a combination of a blood test and ultrasound. The blood test will need to be completed in week 10 of your pregnancy with the referral to the pathology from your GP. The ideal time to undertake the Nuchal Translucency test is between 12 and 13 weeks of your pregnancy, with week 12 weeks 2 days – 12 weeks 4 days being the most ideal for the best results.

What’s involved in the test?

All developing babies have a layer of fluid between the skin and the soft tissue on the back of the body. The sonographer will be taking a measurement of this layer, which is invisible on the ultrasound screen. Depending on the layer of the thickness this can determine if there is a higher risk of Downs Syndrome.

This test uses ultrasound waves so is safe for you and your baby. X-rays are not utilised in this examination.

Who will be performing the procedure?

A sonographer and radiologist from our highly trained team at Imaging Central will perform your test. We have female sonographers available if you feel more comfortable, please request this when you make your booking. The specialist radiologist will complete the report after reviewing your images.

Before the procedure?

You must:

  • Drink 3 – 4 glasses of water (600ml)
  • Do not empty your bladder before the scan (if you feel uncomfortably full, please let reception know and they will guide you).

This is to fill your bladder so we can perform the ultrasound to have the best visibility.

During the procedure?

The nuchal translucency test will take about 30 minutes to perform.

The blood test will be organised through your GP prior to undertaking the ultrasound part of the test.

The images and results will be sent to your referring GP through their preferred method. Please ensure you make a follow up appointment with your referring GP to discuss your results. We will directly phone your referring doctor with any urgent results.

Not every radiology clinic in Perth offers nuchal translucency imaging due to the high level of skill set required. Imaging Central offers nuchal translucency at our Morley clinic. Please call to make your booking at our Imaging Central Morley clinic.
